Free Health Classes Offered by the Knox County Health Department

The Knox County Health Department offers free classes and resources on Type 2 Diabetes and Heart Disease. Click on the topics below to learn more or sign up for a free class today.

Prevent Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is very common, but can be prevented. If you have prediabetes or are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, the Diabetes Prevention Program can help. The Knox County Health Department is covering the cost of a 12-month online program to prevent type 2 diabetes for people who live or work in Knox County. Limited spots are available, so sign up today. Start by filling out this short survey to see if you qualify.

Take the diabetes risk test to find out where you stand. Do you live or work in Knox County AND score 5 or higher on the risk test? The Eat Smart, Move More, Prevent Diabetes Program might be a good fit for you!

During the 12-onth FREE ONLINE program you will

  • Attend live, interactive classes online from your computer or mobile device
  • Receive weekly support from your instructor, a trained lifestyle coach
  • Connect with others working on the same goals as you
  • Learn ways to manage stress
  • Overcome barriers to healthy eating and physical activity!

Today nearly 29 million people are living with diabetes in the United States. Thanks to better treatments, people with diabetes are now living longer – and with a better quality of life – than ever before. If you are living with diabetes, it’s important to make choices that keep you and your loved ones healthy.

Being diagnosed with diabetes is a life-changing event. Managing the disease can be time consuming and overwhelming. That's why the Knox County Health Department offers a free three-part series and a variety of resources to help.

High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and smoking are key risk factors for heart disease. Several other medical conditions and lifestyle choices can also put people at a higher risk for heart disease, including:

  • Diabetes, overweight and obesity, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol use, and stress

Access to healthy foods plays an important role in preventing and managing chronic diseases, like diabetes and heart health.

The Knox County Food Resource Guide provides information on community resources that connect people to healthy food. There is a comprehensive list of food pantries by area of the county as well as information on supplemental nutrition programming.

On the first Wednesday of every month (except August), all KCHD offices and clinics are closed in the morning for staff in-service. On these days, the main location (140 Dameron Ave.) will open at 11 a.m. and the West Clinic (1028 Old Cedar Bluff) will open at 11:30 a.m.
On the third Wednesday of every month, KCHD clinics (Women's Health, COE, CDC, Dental, TIC, Immunizations, COVID clinic and West) are closed in the morning for staff clinical education. On these days, the main location will open at 10 a.m. and the West Clinic will open at 10:30 a.m.
*All other offices will open at 8 a.m.
