Computer Recycling Day

January 14, 2006: This is a one-day event that is held annually to allow City and County residents to recycle old computers and peripherals. The event was held at Staples off of North Peters Rd, and it was estimated over 500 City and County residents visited the event and recycled 27 tons of material. Sponsors of the event are Knox County Solid Waste, City of Knoxville Solid Waste, Staples, Rock-Tenn, FedEx, SP Recycling, US Marines Corps Reserve 4th CEB Delta Co., and 5R Processors. Proceeds from the event benefit the Farragut Optimist Club, Goodwill Industries, and the Humane Society of Tennessee Valley.

Look for another computer recycling event to be held in January 2007 at the same location. Proceeds will again benefit the organizations listed above. Residents may also bring old computers to the City's Transfer Station at 1033 Elm St. during regular business hours. Businesses with 100 computers or less can also take old computers here to be recycled for a fee. Call the Transfer Station (215-6700) for more information. Businesses may also contact 5R Processors (865-457-1621) for more information on electronics recycling.

This event is for the entire family, with children's activities and live music. For more information, go to www.knox-earthfest.org.

Phone Book Recycling Contest

January 2006: Phone books were collected during the months of December and January at participating Knox County schools. This contest is a great way to promote recycling in the schools, as well as a great way to earn the school money.

This event is sponsored by Knox County and the City of Knoxville. Also, thanks to all of those who donated phone books to the schools. Schools that wish to participate in next year's event should contact Sara Hart at 215-JUNK.
