Traffic Calming

Knox County Engineering and Public Works has developed a traffic-calming program to help mitigate the effects of speeding and cut-through traffic experienced in many Knox County subdivisions.  As Knoxville continues to grow, major roadways and intersections in Knoxville are becoming congested causing frustrated motorists to use local subdivision streets to bypass traffic.

The traffic calming program helps provide Knox County subdivisions with a process for identifying and addressing problems related to speeding motorists, excessive traffic volumes and overall concern for safety on subdivision streets.  The implementation of traffic calming strategies and techniques requires neighborhood participation throughout the entire process.  Knox County’s role is to provide guidance and technical assistance, but ultimately the subdivision must choose what it feels is most appropriate for its streets without compromising safety.  All affected residents will have an opportunity to participate in the evaluation process.

If you would like to start the traffic calming process in your subdivision, please visit www.knoxcounty.org/epw/ to download the traffic-calming packet.  This packet includes a table of traffic calming techniques that lists the advantages and disadvantages of each, a flow chart of the traffic calming process (pictured right), and a list of steps detailing traffic calming procedures and balloting.

After the completed application is received, Knox County Engineering will contact you and proceed with initial steps in the traffic calming process.
