Pharmacy

Knox County Health Department Pharmacy primarily provides prescription services for certain patients enrolled in the indigent care program, dental program and Dispensary of Hope.  Patients seeking eligibility for the indigent care or dental program must be evaluated through the Knox County Health Department Social Services department in order to qualify.  Patients seeking services from the Dispensary of Hope can apply directly at the pharmacy.  The length of enrollment time in these programs is intended to be short-term (3 to 6 months).  The pharmacy staff will strive to work with other community partners to assist the enrollee in the search for longer term solutions to medication access.

The Health Department Pharmacy operates as a “closed shop” pharmacy. A “closed shop” pharmacy generally does not provide prescription services to the entire population but to a specific group of people by way of screening and enrollment.  The pharmacy operates to provide short term medication assistance and helps to refer people to long term resources that may be available from other sources.

The pharmacy is not a provider for any insurance company including TennCare.  Therefore, the pharmacy cannot process prescriptions with insurance coverage.  The pharmacy does not charge the enrollee for medications provided through the indigent care, dental or Dispensary of Hope programs.  Patients obtaining medication from the pharmacy provided by other programs or agencies not listed above may have fees involved. These fees are set by the agency or program sponsor, not the Health Department Pharmacy.

In addition to dispensing medication and counseling, our pharmacist and staff are actively involved in emergency response and training for bio-terrorism events, disease outbreak, and mass immunization projects in the Knoxville-Knox County region.
