Dispensary of Hope: If You're a Patient
Have you ever asked your physician, “Is that medicine expensive?” or “Do you have samples of that?
Without prescription insurance, paying for medicine can sometimes be a problem. The Dispensary of Hope can help. If you are a Knox County resident without insurance and meet the financial criteria below, your doctor can simply fill out a referral form. Bring the referral form with your original prescription(s) to Knox County Health Department’s Pharmacy (140 Dameron Avenue) to receive your medications. The form can be downloaded from this Web site. The Dispensary of Hope receives donated, in-date medication from physicians in our community. We stock many brand name and generic drugs that will be used to fill your prescription if you qualify for the program. We do not carry controlled substances such as some pain medications or anti-anxiety medicine.
Income Criteria for Eligibility: 200% of Federal Poverty Guidelines

Dispensary of Hope can fill only prescriptions for medicines we have in stock. An inventory list is available on this Web site. You may qualify for programs sponsored by the drug companies. We can provide you the proper application forms for those programs.
For your first visit to the Dispensary of Hope, please bring the following information:
- ID: Driver’s License or Photo ID
- Proof of residency: a piece of mail showing Knox County residency (i.e., KUB bill, phone bill, cable bill)
- Income: Most Recent tax return, bank statement, pay check stubs, AND/OR
- Benefits received: Statement showing social security, disability, retirement benefits, food stamp letter
- Prescription(s)

The Dispensary of Hope may request the following documents:
- Denial letter from TennCare or other insurance company
- Other documents that may explain current financial situation
- Green Card and/or Social Security Card
