Plug Into Your Community – Electronic Waste Collection Event

Posted: December 31, 2008

Did you have the blue screen of death come up on your computer this year?  Or did you finally get so frustrated with your old operating system that you broke down and bought a brand new computer?  Maybe you have old keyboards or speakers or even old cell phones sitting around and you aren’t sure what to do with them.  Knox County has an answer.

Knox County Solid Waste, in conjunction with the West Knoxville Optimist Club, will host “Plug Into Your Community” on Saturdays January 10 and 24.  These are free electronic waste collection events where you can drive through, drop off and leave.  It’s just that easy.  Drive through, drop off, and leave your electronic waste behind…free of charge.  Knox County wants to help the community properly recycle these items that have hazardous materials in them so that they don’t end up in with regular garbage.

On Saturday, January 10, the collection point will be at Farragut High School, rain, snow or shine.  On Saturday, January 24, drop off your items at Chilhowee Park, again, rain, snow or shine.  There are no fees being charged to drop off your equipment, but any monetary donations you want to make while you are there will gladly be accepted and will benefit Goodwill Industries, East Tennessee Children's Hospital and the Optimist Club of West Knoxville.

Materials that can be dropped off include computer PC systems, CPUs, monitors, mice, keyboards, printers, scanners, laptops, modems, hard drives, speakers, power cords, cables, phones, powers strips, desktop copiers, fax machines, cell phones, and small, portable TVs.

There are a few items that they will not be able to take at the collection points.  Those include:  microwaves, electronics containing hazardous chemicals such as lab equipment, small refrigerators (contain Freon), small stoves, small appliances, cardboard, scrap metal, aluminum cans, or newspapers.

This event is being sponsored by Best Buy, so there are no fees being charged to drop off equipment.  Monetary donations will gladly be accepted and will benefit Optimist Club of West Knoxville, Goodwill Industries, and the East Tennessee Children's Hospital.
