The Knox County Commission, like most legislative bodies, has a system of committees which hear ordinances and resolutions. The committees may refer all ordinances and resolutions to the full County Commission for action. The standing committees of the Knox County Commission are: Finance, Intergovernmental, Economic Development, Cable Television, Tennessee County Services, and the Knox County Beer Board. The Knox County Board of Zoning Appeals is also a committee comprised entirely of members of the County Commission.
Finance Committee
The Knox County Commission's Finance Committee has the responsibility of recommending approval and appropriation of all funds expended by county government. The Finance Committee oversees auditing, automation, and banking procedures for Knox County as well.

Intergovernmental Committee
The Knox County Commission's Intergovernmental Committee has numerous duties including all legislative functions, zoning and planning, purchasing procedures, law enforcement, as well as making recommendation for appointments to county boards and agencies.

Knox County Board of Zoning Appeals
The Knox County Board of Zoning Appeals is comprised of nine members of the County Commission. One Commissioner from each of the nine Commission districts is selected by his or her colleagues to serve as a member of the Board of Zoning Appeals. The Board meets monthly to hear requests for variances of the Knox County zoning regulations.

* In December 2002 and January 2003 the Knox County Commission changed its rules and streamlined the committee process, eliminating duplication and many of the standing committees.
