John Griess is a life long resident of East Tennessee, having been born in nearby Oak Ridge.
Commissioner Griess graduated from the University of Tennessee with a BS degree from the College of Business Administration. Following his graduation, John Griess taught for the Knox County School system for ten years at Farragut High School. For the last eighteen years, John has sold residential and commerical real estate and served as President of the Knoxville Association of REALTORS in 1993.
John Griess began his public service as a member of the Board of Alderman for the Town of Farragut, Tennessee. During this time, he served on the Farragut Municipal Planning Commission, the Farragut Beer Board, and in 1994, as the Town's Vice Mayor. John served as a member of the Board of Aldermen for the Town of Farragut from 1985-994. In 1994 John was elected to the Knox County Commission representing West Knox County.
John Griess was reelected to the Knox County Commission in 1998 and 2002. Commissioner Griess has held virtually every leadership position on the Knox County Commission, having served as Chair of the full Commission, the Knox County Beer Board and Finance Committee.
John Griess is a member of the Optimist Club of Knoxville.
Commissioner Griess is married to Judy Collins Griess. Both are active in their profession and their community.
